Is peel really free?

Yes. There are no credits, no account and no watermark, and downloads are at full resolution. The site is paid for by ads.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Your image is processed by an AI model that runs in your browser and never leaves your device. The only large download is the model itself, which comes from our server and is the same for everyone.

Why is the first image slow?

The first time, your browser has to download the AI model (about 44 to 115 MB, depending on your device). It's cached afterwards, so later images start much faster.

Does it work offline?

You need a connection to open the page and, the first time, to download the model. After that, background removal itself runs locally and sends nothing.

Which image formats can I use?

JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF in all modern browsers. HEIC works if your browser can open it (Safari, for example). Animated GIFs use the first frame. SVG isn't supported.

How large can my image be?

Up to 20 MB. Photos above about 24 megapixels are reduced automatically (less on phones with little memory) so the browser doesn't run out of memory.

What do I get when I download?

A PNG with a transparent background, or a JPG on white, black or a colour you choose. The output has the same resolution as your original.

The result isn't perfect. Can I fix it?

Yes. Click Erase / Restore and paint over the area. Erase removes more, Restore brings parts back. You can undo, zoom in and switch the preview background to spot leftover edges.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in current versions of Safari, Chrome and Firefox. On phones without WebGPU it uses a lighter model, which is slower and less precise on hair.

Which AI model do you use?

BiRefNet lite (MIT licence) on devices with WebGPU, and ORMBG (Apache 2.0 licence) as a fallback. Both are open-source models that run in your browser through ONNX Runtime Web.

Can I use the images I make commercially?

We don't claim any rights to your images. Whether you can use a photo commercially depends on the rights to the original photo, and that's up to you.

Can I process many images at once, or use an API?

Not at the moment. peel processes one image at a time and has no API.
